Gender Justice Navigator FAQ

Who is conducting this survey?

INTERSECT, a new statewide gender justice collaborative is partnering with the Center for Women’s Leadership, Emily Evans Consulting Practice, the Meyer Memorial Trust, Pride NW and the Marie Equi Institute to conduct this survey and build this exciting new tool.

What are the goals of the Gender Justice Navigator Survey?

We seek to build a comprehensive map/directory of individual organizations and programs AND to assess the health and well-being of the gender justice field as a whole. We will do this by:

1) Creating a free, publicly available, searchable map and directory – the Gender Justice Navigator – we’ve built this survey to support the development of this Navigator.

2) Using the survey findings to develop a report on the health of the Gender Justice ecosystem in Oregon and Native Nations that share geography with Oregon. We will share this report and our findings in a series of briefings in Fall 2023.

What do you mean by gender justice?

We define gender justice as: a world free of any gender-based barriers to thriving. We also believe that gender justice is inherently intersectional, and therefore can only be achieved when all forms of oppression cease to exist.

Examples of Gender Justice organizations include organizations or programs that:

  • Serve survivors of domestic and sexual violence

  • Offer workforce development for primarily women and/or gender expansive people

  • Provide youth development supports to girls and/or gender expansive youth

  • Support current or formerly incarcerated women/gender expansive folks

  • Provide night or day shelter for primarily women/gender expansive folks

In general, we are referring to any organization or program working to advance equity, inclusion, or justice for people or populations with marginalized/minoritized genders.

Or organizations/programs that primarily serve people with specific gender identities or gendered experiences. By this, we mean serving at least 75% women/gender-expansive folks.

What kind of information will be collected in this survey and how will it be used?

The survey is made up of two sections. It is completely up to you what information you share with us. At the end of each section, we will ask your explicit permission to use the information you shared in that portion of the survey.

Section 1: Gender Justice Navigator Survey

The information you choose to share in this section will be used to create a publicly available Gender Justice Navigator that maps and provides key information about Gender Justice organizations in Oregon and Native Nations that share geography with Oregon. This information will be available to the public.

Specific information that will be publicly available on the Gender Justice Navigator includes:

  • Organization/program name

  • Location and mailing address

  • Website and organizational contact information

  • Culturally specific/ gender-specific communities served

  • Key service area(s)

  • Organization budget

  • Year Founded

  • Number of staff

  • Number of people served annually

  • Geography served

  • Type of legal entity

  • Volunteer opportunities

  • Desire to be contacted by media/researchers/advocacy coalitions

Section 2: Ecosystem Health Assessment Survey

The information you choose to share in this will be used to create a summary report about the health and well-being of the Gender Justice field in Oregon and Native Nations that share geography with Oregon.

This information will be presented in aggregate, meaning that it will be combined with the information shared by other organizations, to make general statements. Any quotes that are shared in the report will be deidentified, meaning that we will remove any information that could be used to connect the quote to your organization/program. It is completely up to you what information you share with us. Again, at the end of each section, we will ask your explicit permission to use the information you shared in that section.

How will my organization’s information be stored?

All data collected will be stored on a secure server, with multiple layers of encryption and password protection. All staff members who have access to the stored data have signed comprehensive confidentiality agreements.

What is the timeline for the public release of Gender Justice Navigator?

We plan to conduct the survey and follow up throughout the early summer. Late summer and early fall will be spent cleaning the data and creating the data visualization for the navigator. By late fall we anticipate being able to make the Gender Justice Navigator publicly available to everyone, free of charge. We look forward to staying in touch with all survey participants with project updates.

How can I learn more about INTERSECT, the new statewide gender justice collaborative?

You can join us for a virtual gathering on July 27th! We’re excited to connect with gender-focused nonprofit organizations, share what we’ve been working on, and hear about your hopes and dreams for a statewide gender justice collaborative. RSVP for the event here and you can sign up for our mailing list here

How will the Gender Justice Navigator be updated in the future/How can I update my organization’s information?

We plan to reach out to organizations annually to see if their information needs to be updated. If you’d like to update your organization’s information at a different time, just email us at info@intersectnorthwest.org and we’ll happily update it for you.

I would prefer to do a quick phone call with you to answer these questions, rather than completing the survey, is that possible?

Yes! Absolutely you can make an appointment for a phone call directly here or you can email us at info@intersectnorthwest.org and we’ll work with you to find a good time to connect.

About the LGBTQIA2S+ Community Group Mapping and Needs Assessment Initiative:

“Because I Count: LGBTQIA2S+ in Oregon” (a project co-led by The Equi Institute and Pride Northwest, Inc.) is a collaborative partner of the Gender Justice Navigator project. Reach out to Anna Silberman, Outreach Campaign Coordinator at annas@equi-institute.org with any questions! “Because I Count” project collaborators are identifying, mapping, and conducting a needs assessment of groups and organizations working with and advocating specifically for LGBTQIA2S+ people and communities in Oregon.

The “Because I Count” Project data collection effort overlaps with the Gender Justice Navigator project in several specific aims:

  1. To identify and build relationships with as many LGBTQIA2S+ community groups and organizations across the state as possible

  2. To create greater visibility, accessibility, and interconnectedness of LGBTQIA2S+ community groups and organizations through a publicly available LGBTQIA2S+ community resource mapping dashboard

  3. To conduct a needs assessment survey of LGBTQIA2S+ community groups and organizations to better understand their strengths, needs, opportunities, and challenges, summarized in a comprehensive report
